What is a film poster?

The Dark Knight

Our group has taken inspiration from The Dark Knight poster, mainly from the glowing bat symbol on the building. We feel that the symbol itself really emphasis the title of the film and helps the viewer to link this poster with all the other 'Batman' films.
We also particularly like the camera angle used to frame Christian Bale. The 'Worm's eye view' shows how he is a dominant protagonist within the film. Moreover, the glowing bat symbol on the building immediately draws the viewer in to the centre of the image, meaning that it acts as a focus point for the poster as a whole. We also like the use of the clouds and smoke at the top of the screen. In our poster, we intend to replicate the use of smoke by using it at the bottom to act as a background for title and other advertising features of our film.

Mad Max

This poster is similar to that of 'The Dark Knight', however, the difference is a large use of vehicles in the background and a long shot of the film's protagonist facing them. The customised vehicles and the warm, dark lighting help the audience to understand that this is an action film, and that the film will contain many stereotypical action film traits, such as car chases and gun battles.  Furthermore the smoky effect that has been put behind the large vehicle gives the feel that there is much more danger that is yet to face the main protagonist who stands there on his own. The words "what a lovely day" has been put on the top of the poster, showing a complete contract to the action that is shown below. However, the most obvious part of the poster that we like, is the ominous orange glow that gives an immediate impression of danger. We intend to use something like this on our poster.

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

In our opinion, this film is the one that relates closet to our trailer. In the poster we can see all the main characters that take part in the film. Also, the positions of the characters suggest their level of importance throughout the movie. Furthermore almost all of the characters possess weapons in the poster, emphasising the action genre of the film. The colour scheme in the poster is also quite dark, suggesting a sinister, dangerous atmosphere within the film. Even though it isn't the most obvious and important part of this poster, we very much like the font used. This font is trademarked with the G.I Joe films, and can be seen on most if not all of their posters. This is something we would like to create. Therefore, on our poster, we are going to use the title font that was used in the actual trailer.

The Bourne Legacy

This film poster is somewhat different to the others. It features only the film's protagonist, hidden behind a slider effect to represent secrecy. This suggests a film based more around an agent, than a collective, however, some of the techniques used here can be used in our favour, such as the white writing on the black areas of the poster. Moreover, we like the use of the actors names at the bottom in a thin, streamline font, which we think, could represent professionalism. Overall, the colour scheme of the whole poster suggests a sleek atmosphere. We like this very much as it links somewhat with the "007" franchise, suggesting that there is a secret story to the whole film. From this poster specifically, we very much like the use of the tag line which has been blended into the slider effect.

Kingsman

The last poster we have taken inspiration from is the 'Kingsman' poster. We like the use of explosions and weapons because it clearly outlines to the viewer, that this film is of the action genre. Moreover, this poster features all the film's main characters, which is useful for a group of 4 people such as us.
We also like the use of colour here; on a black background, the explosions in the middle draw the viewer in, focussing their attention into the middle, where they can see key image from the film. furthermore the poster uses the films logo to focus the attention on the middle of the poster. Moreover, the black and gold colour scheme is reminiscent of the "Bourne legacy" film poster. It presents a sleek, professional and secretive atmosphere, and it is something that can be clearly related to that particular film.

Test Shots

We carried out a few test shots in order to try out a few editing techniques. To suit the genre of an action film, we have used Final Cut Pro to place a scene of a helicopter crash, with Michael barely escaping. This creates a sense of danger for the audience, and thus adds to the pleasurable effect of watching the trailer. We intend to do a few more practise shots in order to help us come to a decision as to what is best to use during the editing process.

The second test shot we conducted was of a mimic fight scene between our actors, George and Michael. We kept the camera moving at all times in order to get different shots of different angles of the fight scene.

Why is scripting an important part of planning?

Having a script is an important part of planning because it gives a structure for the producers to be allowed to tell their story through. The script tells the story from beginning to end describing the stock footage that has been used. Our script benefited us as it included each piece of dialogue that our characters had. Furthermore it stated how long each scene would take as well as the camera angles and music used. This made it easier for us to during the filming process as we had a documented structure to follow. In addition it also made the editing process easier as it was known when to add in and cut the music in addition to the order that the clips went it.

Task Ten: 25 Word Pitch

Following the capture of Hades, when everyone thinks things will be back to normal, the group encounter a greater enemy. Hades' leader and mentor - Kronos.

Task Nine: Costume and Make-Up

Costume

Mask 1

This mask will be used by the character Odin who is played by Charlie. We chose this mask for Odin as we wanted an upgrade from the masks used in the previous film. We believe this mask gives more of a sense of professionalism in contrast to the old mask which was more criminal looking. This fits in well with the character as he is the leader of the group and is therefore seen as the most professional. We gave all of the characters different masks to reflect their personalities this time, rather than them all having the same masks.

Mask 2
We chose to use this mask for the character Oracle, played by Yassir. We decided to give Oracle this mask because it gives the character more of a sense of anonymity which fits in well with the character, as he is seen as the 'anonymous' hacker who is only sometimes seen in the battlefield - hiding his identity. The fact you can only see the eyes shows that he is more mysterious than the other members of the group and we believe it fits in perfectly with Yassir's character.
Mask 3
Hulk, who is played by George, will the character using this mask. We thought this mask would be a good choice for Hulk as he is the character that is seen as a brute, and therefore deserves a more \brutish, criminal looking mask than the other characters. It also looks more intimidating than the others, which, combined with the character's size, means enemy characters will be more afraid of him.
Mask 4

This mask will be used for the character Reaper, played by Michael. We chose this mask for Reaper as the name 'Reaper' reminded us of The Grim Reaper, which gave us the idea of giving him a skull/skeleton mask. He will also wear sunglasses so that he bears more of a resemblance to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 character 'Ghost', who Reaper is based off. Similarly to Hulk's mask, it gives the character a more intimidating feel but in a more comedic way - linking to the sarcastic humour of Reaper.

Black Jeans

All of the character will be wearing black jeans. We decided to do this because the shade of black blends in well with the rest of the costume which is all black. It also gives a feel that the characters are still wearing more casual style clothes to highlight the fact that they do not want to necessarily be seen as a 'professional' organisation.
Black Shoes

For the footwear, the characters will once again be wearing different things, however this time it is not based on their characters and is instead just to give the group a more diverse clothing range. All of the shoes worn willl be black to keep with the theme of wearing black clothes, and again, we chose to use more casual looking shoes for each of the characters, rather than smart shoes like last time.

Black Armoured Gloves

For the gloves, we chose to use the same as what we used in our opening sequence to the first 'Rebellion' film. They are armoured gloves which we think are one of the main things that brings the whole costume together, because without gloves, the characters may look strange and not as 'prepared' for battle.

Black Hoodie
The black hoodie will be worn by the four members of the team along with the masks. This is so they can conceal their identity when on the battlefield. However, unlike the masks, all the team will wear the same hoodie to show that they are a unit that operates as one.

The overall appearance that these costume pieces will create is one of a stealth-like soldier, or perhaps someone from the special forces. We want the audience to realise from looking at the costume, that we are not an army with an endless budget, but instead, and much like the set, we have to make do with what we have.

Task Eight: Props

Weapons
We have chosen to give each character a weapon that we feel complements their personality. This is so we can continue the custom we used for developing our character where they each have a unique aspect which matches their personality, e.g. their names. The only problem we will face is that when purchasing the firearms, you have to have a license to buy them with black paint. Therefore, to get around this, we will buy matte black and gloss black spray paint, and spray them to make them appear overall more realistic. This will contribute greatly to the authenticity of our final product. The weapons that we have chosen to use are shown down below:

  • G36C - This will be wielded by Odin. It is an all purpose assault rifle which comes equipped with an optic sight to add to the authenticity. This certain one is approximately 74 cm long which is only 1 cm shorter than those used by the military. This weapon is perfect for Odin as he is a all round leader with no speciality but is considered the most efficient member of the group.

  •  SA80 - The SA80 is a long range, british army grade battle rifle. It is approximately 89 cm long and features a optic sight as well as an extendable stock. This is Oracle's weapon. This will be best suited for him as he is the recon, overseeing the battlefield from a distance. However this weapon will not be seen as often as the others as Oracle usually does not appear on the battlefield and prefers to observe and guide the team from a safe location, under dense camouflage.

  • Spas 12 - The Spas 12 is a powerful pump action, 12 gauge shotgun which is deadly in close quarters combat. It is 60 cm long and weighs 1.2 KG. This will be Hulk's weapon of choice as it emphasises his brutal nature and strength. It will feature throughout the whole trailer and will lbw primarily used in scenes which are shot in a closed environment.

  • Nunchucks - The nunchucks are lethal close combat weapons that are lightweight and silent. This is why we have chosen this weapon for Eclipse to suit her small physique which allows her to be agile and manoeuvre easily over obstacles. It is also perfect for her stealth like approach and her ability to take out enemies without anyone knowing she was ever there.

  • This is the pistol that we have selected for Reaper to use. It is a Beretta M9, powered by a CO2 canister. It has an extremely realistic effect making our trailer appear overall more authentic. This weapon suits Reaper's quick-paced fighting style. This weapon will also feature throughout the whole trailer, alongside some of the other weapons we wish to use within our trailer.

Others

  • Oracle will also wear an earpiece. This is to emphasise his role as an overwatch as he needs to be able to relay messages to every member of the team as quickly and efficiently as possible.

  • As well as a headset, Oracle will also use a laptop. This will be used mainly for his character's surveillance operations, but also, in one particular scene, the laptop will be used for hacking into enemy databases and stealing the information.

Task Seven: Actor/Actress shots

Name: Yassir Elbashir
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Height: 5'11"
Hair Colour: Black
Eye colour: Brown
Character(s): Oracle

Yassir's character, Oracle, is still the same computer whiz he used to be in 'Rebellion'. However, now he has progressed and will be seen in the field more, as well a having a more prominent role in the trailer. Oracle is still seen as the "eye in the sky" for the group, but will be included in action scenes just as much as the other characters. We chose Yassir for this role because we wanted to keep with the storyline of 'Rebellion' and he was chosen at that point because of his similarities to the character.

Name: Charlie Netherclift
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Height: 5'10"
Hair colour: Dark Brown
Eye colour: Blue/grey
Character(s): Odin

The role for Odin is going to be played by Charlie because, once again, we decided to stay with the storyline from 'Rebellion', due to the fact that it is a sequel. Odin is still the leader of the group and is considered the most efficient member of the group. This fits Charlie as him and Yassir often act as the leaders of the group in real life. Odin will mostly be seen as the member who keeps the team's morale up when things are going bad.

Name: Michael Nyame
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Height: 5'8"
Hair colour: Black
Eye colour: Dark brown
Character(s): Reaper

We have chosen to cast Michael as the character 'Reaper' because of his sarcastic personality and lethal physical attributes. Moreover, his overall deadpan facial expression, posture and physique fits well with the idea of an assassin like mercenary as his character generally has the stance and face of someone who will not easily crack a smile. We want the character of Reaper to be someone that is quick on his feet, and easy to act stealthily with during missions. as we are doing a sequel to our opening sequence, the main characters where left the same.

Name: George Skeet
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Height: 6"4"
Hair Colour: Dirty Blonde
Eye Colour: Brown
Character(s): Hulk

We chose George for the role of 'Hulk', plainly because of his height and build. 'Hulk' is the strongest member of the team and is closer allied to Odin than he is to any other member of the group. However, his mentality lets him down, due to the fact that he is not that intelligent and will often be the one questioning what is happening, though due to his size and strength, he is a valuable member of the unit.

Name: Harmony Parsons
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Height: 5"2
Hair colour: Brown
Eye colour: Brown
Character(s): Eclipse

Eclipse is a government agent who is trained in the art of stealth and close quarter combat. because of this she will be seen as a rival to "Reaper" who is also known for having exceptional skill in combat. we chose for Harmony to play the character of Eclipse because of her physique. furthermore she is a dancer, she is proven to have good agility which complements her character.

Name: Efue Jimawo
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Height: 5"10
Hair Colour:  Black
Eye Colour: Brown
Character(s): Kronos

We chose Efue to play the role of 'Kronos' because he has a very powerful and deep voice. We also think he has the stern look of an evil villain on his face and therefore fits the role perfectly. We also feel that Efue's physique
fits well with the character as the audience will only really see his silhouette
for most of the trailer. In the trailer he will also
be seen with a hood.

Name: Kofi Howard
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Height: 5" 10
Hair Colour: Black
Eye Colour: Brown
Character(s): Government Official

We chose Kofi to play the role of 'Government Official' because of his stern posture. Furthermore, he has the ability to sound commanding while still keeping his cool and remaining calm.

Name: Rhyss Rhoden
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Height: 6"1
Hair Colour: Black
Eye Colour: Brown
Character(s): Hades

We chose Rhyss because we believed he had the perfect look for the character. Last year we did not use him as the actor as you never saw Hades' face, instead we chose to use Yassir. However, we needed to have someone else to play him this time so chose Rhyss.

Task Six: Location Shots

These pictures are our chosen location shots. We intend to use all of these in some way within the production and filming of the trailer. They have all been chosen to suit specific needs and images within our trailer.

We intend to use this music studio in such a way that creates the atmosphere and appearance of an interrogation room. However, we are also going to use this studio to record our voice notes and voiceovers for our trailer. The equipment within the rooms also helps with the authenticity of the appearance of the room. The computers and sound equipment really help us when it comes to making our set look realistic.

We will use this drama studio to film Kronos' lair. We have chosen to use this room because we are able to create a full blackout to connote a sense of evil and suspicion. We want to create a shady area to help assist with the representation of our chosen villain within our trailer. Similarly, within the drama studio, there are stage lights which we can use to improve the artificial lighting on set. In addition to this, we can change the colour of the wash of the light to suit a certain atmosphere that we need to create.

These stars to a basement will allow us to film the scene where 'Eclipse' is introduced to the audience. We will haver her slowly walk down the stairs wearing high heels to immediately show the audience that we have included a female character.

We intend to use this part of the basement as the main location for filming. This is where the Government Official discusses tactics with his group. Moreover, the naked bricks on the walls give the impression of a 'make-shift' base, thus showing how the group are rebellious force, and have to make do with what they can find.

The main room of the basement will play host to the majority of the clips. This is where the Government Official first introduces the group to 'Eclipse'. Similarly, the boxes that are stored here, give off the impression that the group have just moved in to the base, hence why everything is unorganised.

Overall, we feel that the basement is the ideal place to film. The naked brick walls give a cold, make-shift atmosphere, showing the audience that we are a rebellious group, and do not have the technology or budget of a country's army. Moreover, the boxes in the corners show the disarray that the group have to deal with. It provides a restless setting, showing how the team are always moving from one new base to another.

We also filmed at a location called Millers Pond in Shirley. We used this location for a brief shot of Reaper and Oracle (Michael and Yassir) meeting up on a walkway. We also used it for the big shot where a helicopter is seen crashing in the field. We thought this was a perfect location as it has such a wide open space and emphasises where the group travelled.

In addition, we filmed in a forest found in Shirley. This once again gave the effect that the group travelled to all sorts of different locations. We used it to seem as though the team were stealthily making their way to an attack. It is seen when Oracle (Yassir) is using the tablet, and when Odin and Oracle (Charlie and Yassir) are running through the woods.

We also went to Spring Park to film several random shots including Reaper being carried away by Hulk (Michael and George) and when Reaper jumps over the barrier in slow motion. We believed this was a good place because there is a small wooded area which worked well in contrast to the heavily wooded are we used in other shots.
